High water pressure feels like a good thing until it starts breaking things.
Strong flow in the shower, fast-filling pots in the kitchen, a garden hose that reaches across the yard. None of that feels like a problem. It feels like the plumbing is working exactly the way it should.
What most homeowners do not realize is that the pressure behind that strong flow may be quietly wearing down the system from the inside. Faucet cartridges, supply line connections, water heater components, and toilet valves are all designed to operate within a specific pressure range. When the pressure exceeds a certain range, every component in the home is under more stress than it was built to handle.

What a Pressure-Reducing Valve Does
A pressure-reducing valve, or PRV, is installed on the main water line where it enters the home. Its job is to take the incoming pressure from the municipal supply and reduce it to a level that residential plumbing is designed to handle.
Municipal water systems often deliver pressure well above what homes need. Depending on your location, elevation, and proximity to the supply source, the pressure entering your home can range from 80 to over 150 PSI. Residential plumbing is designed to operate between 40 and 80 PSI. Anything above 80 puts the system at risk.
The PRV sits at the entry point and brings that incoming pressure down to a safe, consistent level, typically set between 50 and 65 PSI. Every fixture, appliance, and connection downstream benefits from that regulation.
Signs Your Home May Need One
It’s easy to miss the signs of high water pressure because they often seem like separate problems. Maybe a faucet keeps breaking, a toilet runs on its own, or a supply hose wears out too soon. Each issue seems unrelated until you realize they all have the same cause.
- Banging or hammering sounds when a faucet or appliance shuts off: This is water hammer, and it happens when water moving at high speed is forced to stop suddenly. The pressure wave slams against the pipe walls and fittings. Occasional hammer may not indicate a pressure problem, but frequent hammer across multiple fixtures often does.
- Faucet cartridges and washers wearing out faster than expected: If you are replacing the same internal components every year or two, the parts are not defective. They are being destroyed by pressure that exceeds their design tolerance.
- Toilets that run or cycle on and off without being flushed: High pressure pushes against the fill valve and the flapper, causing them to leak or fail to seal properly. The toilet runs to compensate, and the cycle repeats.
- Supply lines that develop leaks or bulge: The braided stainless steel hoses under sinks and behind toilets and washing machines are rated for a specific pressure range. Sustained pressure above that range weakens them over time.
- A water heater T&P valve that drips or discharges periodically: The temperature and pressure relief valve is a safety device that opens when internal pressure gets too high. If it is activating regularly, excessive incoming pressure may be the cause.
- Spitting or surging water when a faucet is first turned on: A brief burst of high-pressure water followed by a settling flow can indicate that the pressure in the system is above what the fixtures are calibrated for.
How to Test Your Water Pressure
Before you decide the pressure is too high, it’s a good idea to test it. This is easy to do and takes less than five minutes.
A pressure gauge that threads onto any outdoor hose bib is available at most hardware stores for under $15. Attach it to the bib closest to where the main line enters the home, make sure no other fixtures are running, and turn the bib on. The gauge gives you a reading in PSI.
If the reading is between 40 and 80 PSI, the pressure is within the normal range. If it is above 80 consistently, a pressure-reducing valve should be part of the conversation with your plumber.
Test at different times of day if possible. Municipal pressure can fluctuate, often running higher during off-peak hours when fewer homes are drawing water from the system.
What Happens If High Pressure Goes Unchecked
The damage from high water pressure is cumulative. It does not cause a single dramatic failure. It accelerates the wear on every component in the system simultaneously.
Fittings loosen gradually under constant stress. Valves that should last a decade fail in half that time. The water heater operates under higher internal pressure with every heating cycle. Supply hoses that are rated for seven to ten years of service develop weak points at year four or five.
The plumbing repair costs that follow high pressure are spread across so many fixtures that most homeowners never connect them to a single cause. They replace a faucet cartridge here, a supply hose there, a toilet fill valve a few months later, without realizing the pressure is what is wearing everything out.

What the Installation Involves
A PRV is installed on the main water line, typically near the shutoff valve where the water enters the home. The installation requires cutting into the main line, fitting the valve, and adjusting it to the desired output pressure.
A plumber handles this in a single visit, usually in two to three hours. The water supply is shut off during the work and restored once the valve is installed and tested. After installation, the plumber verifies the output pressure at multiple fixtures to confirm the system is regulated correctly.
Most PRVs are set between 50 and 65 PSI. The exact setting depends on your home’s fixture requirements and the plumber’s assessment of what the system performs best at. The valve is adjustable, so it can be fine-tuned after installation if needed.
A standard PRV installation typically costs $300 to $600 including parts and labor. Compared with the cumulative cost of the component failures it prevents, the investment pays for itself within the first year or two for most homes with high-pressure issues.
A PRV Does Not Last Forever
Pressure-reducing valves have a service life of roughly 7 to 12 years, depending on the water quality and the volume of water the home uses. Over time, the internal spring and diaphragm wear, and the valve may begin allowing higher pressure through.
